Default Heater removal?

Thinking about pulling all the heater related hardware out of my 68. Anybody done this? Just curious how much weight you can actually save.

I've got both spare inner and outer heater boxs as wellas an old heater core.
I guess I can have them weighed next time I head down to the hardware store if nobody else can answer you.

I don't think you'll save that much weight just pulling the heater related stuff. If you pull all the ductwork, vacuum devices, hoses, core, etc. I would be surprised if it was more than 20 pounds.

I assume you don't have an A/C car since you didn't mention that. If you pull all that, then you're talking some weight.

On my '70, the heater core and the inside box weighs 11 lbs according to digital bath scale. Don't forget that if you remove the inner box you have a big hole to seal up in the firewall insulation as the box covers a 8.5" x 12" heater core nest.

I just finished tearing my inner box apart and replacing all of the seals but haven't got the other work done for pre-install.

Hope this helps.

IMHO, the only reason to remove the heater core would be to prevent it from rusting thru and ruining your firewall insulation and carpet like did. But with that said, it would easier to just bypass the coolant flow to the core.

Thanks for the info. I guess maybe it's not worth the work. My car is an A/C car originally, but the heavy A/C pieces are all gone. Who needs A/C in a car with T-Tops and removeable back glass?

Anyway, I guess I might as well try to fix the heater unit. Being able to defog the windshield is probably enough of a reason by itself.

...couldnt agree more with you...

through it away, you'll have a cleaner looking engine bay, that's the best return from getting rid of it all...for the open firewall, you only need to cut a sheet of alu and srew it just in the hole.

This is a pic from two years ago, you can see how clean and 'empty' the engine bay looks, there is only what's needed, the engine and it's accessories...

Here are another two, taken just a few weeks ago from another perspective...

In this last one you can partly see the alu sheet covering the firewall.

Tomorrow I could take more specific pics if you wish so...
