Default Convertible 78- 82????

I've seen a few of 78 to 82 convertibles and was wondering who was making them and when were they produced. I know GM didn't offer them.
How many of these cars were produced? How did they make them...remove the entire rear clip and replace with a 75 rear convertible clip?? What price range do they sell for?

parts sitting in place.

bonded in place

Are you looking for one or do you have one that you want to convert?

The lid and rear deck are available from ACI or Vanacor. I paid Vanacor $867 with tax for mine.

I have heard that body shops get upwards of 10K for this work. I will have less than 2k in parts in mine but I don't have plans for any kind of top right now.

I dont believe that they were produced in the factory, just custom made by people who wanted one. Kind of like wheel flares

Hi Kevin. Your 2k sounds right. I'm short of 3k on mine, but the last pricey item I need is a left door glass. I've kept very good records on cost, I'm going to post a full report this spring when done.

I had someone e-mail me a couple weeks ago about one of my old posts where I said the deck lid wasn't available aftermarket. He took me to task and said Vanacor was offering one now! That's a good thing!

The only thing I can think of not re-popped is the deck lid hinges (and maybe the under dash braces, if a body decides to mess with them). It's almost to the point someone wanting to do this will be able to buy everything new to do it and not rely on hunting bits and pieces. Admittedly, it will be very expensive to go all new, but possible......

There were a few convertibles made under the "Duntov" name by a converter. Should be a few good threads in the archives about them.
