door key code question

door key code question
When i bought my car 2 weeks ago it only had the ignition key, but on the key ring was a tiny rectangle with numbers. is this possibly the ignition and door key codes?

That's probably the key code to the ignition.ie:rectangular key head has a rectangular punch out.the door key would be half moon shape.Steve
I believe it simply allows the person to select the proper shape key for cutting.

I've heard this referred to as a key "knock out". When I bought my '76, I received a set of keys with one having the rectangular "knock out". It has a 4 digit code which I haven't been able to decode yet.
