Let's start off by saying that I do not want to use any one's carfax account. I just want to know what kind of info they give you? Such as, The years that it was inspected by the state? Who bought it? If there was a accident with the car wil, they just tell you that or will they detail the damage { details such as repair cost and or police reports}..Do they give any info in detail? Thanks
The only time I saw one was when a dealer tried to show me one to prove a car didn't have an accident...but it proved nothing. Carfax is dependent upon shops to provide them with their data. So if a car was in an accident and the shop doesn't participate in the Carfax program, nothing appears on the report...and the buyer THINKS the car was never hit. The same applies to maintenance and repairs...you only see what Carfax can capture.
I don't know how accurate the state registration information is.
In my opinion the Carfax report is not a accurate portrayal of the life of the vehicle, but it can be one of many tools you can use during a car inspection. But dont be fooled into thinking if its not on the report nothing happened.
The one thing that it does show is, how many times the car was re-titled. Meaning, how many owners has it had. This could be interesting, especially is the car is 20-30 years old.
I got one for my 81, but Carfax info only went back to 89. It shows when and where it was titled or registered each year including the mileage each time. It also shows if it passed or failed emmission testing if it was registered in a state that requires it, again it shows the mileage at each entry. It also will tell you if the VIN has been reported in any accidents, fires or floods. Mine was over two pages long and it was nice to be able to verify the mileage.

when I was shopping for a driver to go back and forth to work in I signed up for carfax and ran several VIN numbers thru it on some cars I was looking at. Basically they showed the dealer services and warranty work. There was an 04 Oldsmobile that I was looking really hard at and it showed nothing out of the ordinary, it had 38K miles on it. When I went back to the dealer to check it out a little closer I noticed the rubber gasket going around the trunk was loose, upon closer inspection it showed where a new quarter panel had been added. Dealer was very embarrassed and said they had no idea as they had just bought the car at the auction. Again, it only picks up what is reported.
