Some say permanent magnet and others gear reduction and others high torque.

Can someone explain the differences?

Your OEM starter is a Delco brand. Anything else would be the Minis. The old style or original Delco could be a heavy duty or a light duty. Thats determined where the switch connection is located behind the switch near the back of the case. If it`s 3/4 of an inch behind the switch, it`s a HD, The best of the originals. GM has introduced a smaller permanent magnet starter for late model SB`s and BB`s . Much lighter in weight and smaller. This is a Metric starter and requires new mounting bolts in the older applications and is the best of the lot.

As I said all the OEM correct starters are Delcos which are re-manufactured as and by several brands all over the country. These may or may not be advertised as Delcos and many times use the re builders name instead.

The minis are new gear reduction starters basically for foreign automobiles or engines adapted by aluminum mounting brackets for multiple applications of domestic cars including Corvettes.

But some high torque starters, that are not called mini's, may not provide the heat soak benefits everyone is looking for. And the heat soak benefits only come from permanent magnet types.

Is that right?

no,

what all starters need is,
1, good connections,
2, a good battery,
3, and a good charging system

I've got a mini hi torqure starter on my 454. It bolted right on and seems to work fine.

With the small size I get lots of clearance with the headers and should not have the overheating problems you offen get with the Delcos.

My original would soak up the heat and not work. I got a Powermaster from Summit. It has never have a heat problem When it was a few years old the solenoid died. Powermaster replaced it as no charge.

So are ALL mini's a "permanent magnet" type and is that the only type good for heat soak?
