Default 68 vette???

Just a quick question. A friend of mine has a 68 vette. We are trying to see what motor came in this. We believe it is a 427, but are not real sure. What do we need to look for to know for sure.

thanks

Are you trying to identify the motor in it now? Or is there a SB or no motor in it? /:\

It has a S.B in it now. But it is not the original motor.

one quick way assuming the gauges are original is to look at the tach redline. If the yellow goes from 5400 to 5600 it is 427 390 or 400hp.If it has a very high 6500 redline then it is 435hp 427.anything else it is a small block car. There are other driveline differences (rear end caps ,fuel line etc.) but the tach is a quick way

He dropped the tank and found the build sheet today. It is a 427 car, not sure if it is 390 hp, or 400 hp. Some discrepancy on whether which one it was.

The build sheet may list 390HP L36 with an "upgrade" to 400hp L68.
Look at the fuel lines, the tripower had only one from the tank while the Qjet had a return line as well. Tacho redline will be the same for both motors.

It would have the option code L-68 for a 400HP tri - power car or
option code L-71 for a 435HP tri-power car
