I'll need to do this on my 70 because one of the bulbs is burned out at the 80 mph position (12 o'clock position). Yours sounds easier to remove than mine.
While you have it out replace all the guage bulbs. Thats what I plan to do.
You just need to press the release tab and the speedo cable will disconect as you slid the speedo box out. The cable will snap back in as you line up the cable and push it back. Doesn't matter if it is a cruse car or not.
The harness plug is in the center and has 2 squeeze tabs to disconect. You must be careful with the plug as you pull it loose so that it does not damage the connection on the card.
I like to remove the 2 steering colum mount bolts and let the colum drop a little to give more room for the cluster to come out without removing the wheel. It will come down an inch or two.
The allen heads on the front are not just for looks as they are on the center cluster. These allen head screws are what hold the speedo and tac in the plastic box. You can remove the speedo and tac and line the box with silver tape for brighter lighting.
While it is out take a good look at the circut cards as most need to be replaced. I replaced mine and they corrected alot of problems.
You've got me thinking now. What kind of silver tape to make it brighter? Duct tape? Can't be...
I think it is more common in the aviation industry, however you could try some heating and cooling shops. It is an aluminum foil type of tap used on fire walls and othe hot area of some aircraft. You could also use some adhedsive with foil.

Try your local Lowes or Home Depot. Its in the heating and cooling section where they sell all their metal duct pieces. It's not too bad to buy, something like 3 or 5 dollars a roll.
I am in the process of redoing the entire interior on my 75 right now and had to go out and get some to seal the heater box to the defroster line. For some reason the two just didn't align and left a 1/2" gap...
I was looking at this thread because I've completed the right side and I am getting ready to pull the left....
I agree 100% with the earlier suggestion to replace the bulbs. I stopped in the middle of my project so I could order a complete set of replacement bulbs for my car. Believe me, pulling the center console, and dash cluster isn't something I want to do again anytime soon.
I have the dash out, replaced the bulbs, even replaced the dash pad [I wasn't expecting to, but when it came out in pieces, I didn't have much choice....]
I dropped the two bolts for the column, but it isn't moving a whole lot, maybe 3/4 to an inch. In any case, the column isn't dropping enough for the dash to "slide right in". I have the wheel removed to give more room. I'm not sure what else I can do, except drop the bolts where the column attached to the steering box and I really don't want to futz with a bolted connection that hasn't been touched in 30-plus years.
I don't want to put any twisting or pushing on the dash pad and don't want to force anything. I am missing something, cuase this is a real PITA!!!!
