its a 79, i am not trying to pull off a $125,000 car here, just would like the tag to match my new color combo
Cape... you opened up a can of worms here. My .02 - it's your car, do what you want to it.
My '71 was originally Brands Hatch Green. The previous owner wanted a Mille Miglia Red car, did a beautiful paint job, and changed the tag for his own reasons. When he put the car up for sale on this forum, he took endless abuse because of the trim tag issue. He gave me the original tag, was up front with me about the change, and was not trying to commit fraud. As long as you're up front about it and are doing it for your own reasons/satisfaction... like I said, it's your car. Just be prepared to take some heat.
thanks, i really dont see what all the hoopla is all about. the car was blue on blue. I am changing it to red with doeskin interior. I am doing up the doorjams so they look nice. I thought it would look nice to have a correct trim tag, nothing more nothing less.
Its not like I am changing out a vin number or anything.
Guys, you need to chill out.

And I suppose when you go to sell it, the first thing you will point out is the fraudulent, I mean "correct" trim tag.
Fortunately someone privately IMed it to you so they wouldn't hear about it.
Clearly you can do what ya want and you maybe completely honest about it but someday that car will be sold as an "original" resale red car.
Changing anything that identifies how the car left the plant just seems wrong to me.
How about listing the vin here so at least if someone ends up asking about this car in the future, 2 or 3 owners from now, they might find out it's supposed to be blue on blue.
My car was grossley mis-repersented in other ways and it took $3K to get where it should have been. If I could of, I would have taken legal action for that deception.
