Default changing out the rear cover

one of the threads in my rear end cover is stripped out. is it hard to change out the cover while the rear is on the car. Another option, can a nut be welded into the current cover to fix this problem?

thanks

I just did mine last month. Everything I've read suggests pulling the rear out complete, due to the inaccesibility of the bolts on top of the cover holding it to the crossmember. Once the whole assembly is out, you'll see why.

Its not hard; just a lot of things to remove. Rear tire carrier; exhaust (I cut mine off, junk anyway). Outer spring bolts to unload the spring, camber rods (mark them for position), halfshafts and U-joint at the front of the rear gear, front carrier bolt for the rearend, and the crossmember, while its still bolted to the rear. You will find posts describing how stuck it will be to the frame, but mine came off very easily. I did soak the cushions with PB Blaster for a week or so, though.

I don't think you could weld a nut to the cover, its cast, and that area isn't the flattest. Why not just grind that inside corner of the cover flat, so a nut fits smooth on it, and just running a bolt up through and tightening it to the nut? Worth a shot, I guess. But I would also try rethreading/tapping it before taking the time to remove the rear.

Hope thats helpful.

Try a helicoil. They work very well in most situations. Available at your favorite parts store.

I agree; they work great. I even used one once on a cast iron cylinder head for an intake manifold bolt and it has held with no problems. Depending on where your stripped threads are, you should be able to prep the hole (drill/ream out and thread) by hand to accept the helicoil.
If you buy the complete kit, you'll get everything you need and then next time, you only need to buy the coil.
