Need help on how to get the glass out of the way to allow access to the nuts that hold the mirror on. Door panel is removed and have tried removing the glass with no luck. Has anyone had this experiance and how did you solve this. I'm really hung up on this and it's driving my wacky. Art
yea, ive done this several times, and even MADE my 78 pass. door accept the later remote mirror. but its been awhile. the glass should come out VERY easy. its putting it back thats hard! haha. if memory is correct its just two bolts that hold the glass to the part that holds it in the tracks. the glass doesnt even have to come out just drop it some in the front to acces the bolts for the mirror.

You do not have to remove the glass to remove the mirrors. Lower the window all the way down. Take the two window anti rattle clips out. These are the black things that hold the glass out. One is in the front and one in the back. Now the window will flop into the inner door frame. Take duct or masking tape and tape the window against the outer part of the door.
I use a 7/16 1/4 drive socket and a 1/4 drive breaker bar to loosen the nuts.(I took an old socket and ground it down a little to fit better) Once you have the nuts loose you can take a flat blade screwdriver to turn them off. Use a small magnet to catch them so they don't fall down into the door.
Before you reinstall the mirror turn it upside down and make sure the screws are tight that hold the head to the base also make sure the studs are tight. If you have nobody to help when installing the mirror here is a tip. First make sure you have the base gasket on the correct way. The thick part goes to the inside of the mirror. Put the mirror studs into the holes. Now take a some duct tape and tape the mirror to the door so it can't fall off the car.
Take the magnet and a screwdriver to aid in starting the nuts back on the studs. Once the nuts are tight, remove the tape holding the window, reinstall the anti rattle clips and check the widow fit when up. Make any adjustments if needed and reinstall the door panel.
Corvette Ed is right on the money. I also made my own tool for removal. I ground the top off a 7/16" 1/4 drive socket and then fabricated a handle for it. be sure and wrap the end of your socket handle with tape so that if it comes in contact with the edge of your window it does not scratch it.

great idea! but if you dont feel like making tools and taping everything up and using magnets, just loosen the glass
I just want to thank all who provided me with advice on how to replace my mirrors. The socket and breaker bar deal worked pretty good with help from my wife with the small fingers. Thanks again.
