Default Rear Storage Compartment Door Frames

Looking for someone who's changed carpet on the Rear Storage compartment doors.

I have a new carpet set and need some advice on how to separate the door frame from the door itself. The old carpet covers the door completely with the frame fitted over it. Would it be best to cut along the frame, leaving the out carpet under the frame lip, and then trim the new carpet to fit within the frame. I'm just afraid if I start prying the frame off the door, the frame will break.

Thanks for the help.

I'm afraid the only way to do it right is to remove the frames....The carpet will unravel along the cut edge otherwise, I think. I side-stepped that whole problem by buying a complete new three door set with new carpet, frames, and outer frame, all assembled...

I did mine on my 68
Remove the frames, remove all the old carpet, install and glue down the new carpet, trim if it overlaps the doors so that it is flush with the edge of the doors and then install the frames.
Not a difficult job

Save yourself some aggrivation and replace the whole unit.
The doors are made of fiberboard and the screws strip out very easily making it hard to tighten the frames properly.

Hi,
The compartment doors on my 82 are a plastic/fiberglass material (I don't know if your 81 is the same). Replacing the carpet on my doors was a lot of work. The doors had to be ground down along the edge to allow the new frames to fit. After the carpet was glued on, it had to be trimmed, then the frames had to be attached with glue and screws. Way too much work. I would order the complete assembly if I had to do it again.
Good luck,
Tom

I replaced my compartment doors and frame as a unit. I'm glad I did. The old frame was so brittle, it cracked in a couple places. Granted, I wasn't that careful removing it.

Also, my car came with the leather pull straps. After having several pull out, I replaced them with the metal pulls from the later years. I painted the glossy black and they look nice.

I replaced the carpet on mine. Had to cut along the edge of the frame. The carpet was glued down tight! Had to sharpen a gasket remover and srape and peel. Cut the new carpet to go under the edge of the frame. Glued it down. Looks great, but it was a real pain.

Thanks all, I leaning to ordering a new set up, looks like Ecklers or Corvette Central have everything I need.

Once again, thanks for all the feedback.

I tried your way and it didn't work out. I got a whole set with frame and carpet from Mid America and it worked great with a good color match to the new carpet on my '82.
