just went to change plugs, figured should be easy but couldnt get wrench on. problem is shield is in way of getting wrench on plug. should i try and bend it ot loosen it from header bolt? its a 454. also what plugs should i get and what is gap? thanks. nutsy.
Which plug is causing the problem? I have a BB and I had a PITA to change the #2 and #4 plugs due to the A/C compressor location, then one of the forum members told its much better to reach from the wheel well (after removing the tire of course), since then it only takes 10 min to change all 8 plugs.
I am not sure what you need but it sounds like a “crows foot” might be just the ticket. I have a DD that I use one on the number 4 plug and would be a PIA if I didn’t have it.
I just did this myself this weekend. Believe me, with the heatshields in place, it's a real PITA to get the plugs out. One thing I did was to take the foam rubber insulation out of my sparkplug socket to give it a little more wiggle room to allow the socket to seat on the plug better. I did eventually get them all out. Good luck!
I haven't changed plugs in mine yet but I know one side has the shield and the other doesn't. The former owner was changing his plugs and forgot to put the shield back on one side and said it was such a PITA that he didn't want to put it back on. When I bought the car he handed to it me and said "if it matters to you you can put it on later but I ain't busting my knuckles to do it."
