According to AC Delco's website it's either R44TS or R45TS. Nothing about an extended tip. But, I have little to no experience with the 454 engine.

I would use the ones called for and that is the R44TS which has a little longer tip already than the plain R44T, not sure why they used the "XL" extra long tips unless they figured longer is better..LOL

R44TS plugs are as common as mud. The XL's are a full 3/4 reach according to AC's book. The extended tip on the TS plugs is supposedly to project the electrode into the cylinder a bit more and into the intake charge for longer plug life and cleaner emissions. Does it work?? No idea.

Use the R44TS plugs, they will work fine. It's what the factory installed in lots of cars.

UNLESS your motor has NEVER been re-built -
you will not be sure of clearances...
I would use the same as you took out.
Call me conservative, just me.

The ones he took out are too long and not what are spec'd for his motor, that is not being conservative.

R44T will be fine- gap them at .035 The difference between the 2 (R44T and R44TS) is just the tip. With a stock point type ignition any bigger gap may cause a miss. Is the emissions label still readable? It'll have the plug gap printed on it..

If your car has the original equipment heads I would stick with the T plugs. I had the same question a while back and found some good info on the NCRS site. Here is the link to that thread.
