just bought spark plugs and had a hell of a time getting out so i dont want to do it twice, question is plugs i took out are ac delco r 44 xl. new ones are one car calls for are r 44 t. its a 72 454. the xls have a longer thread to make plug go in farther. can someone tell me why and which 1 should i use?
I would use the ones called for and that is the R44TS which has a little longer tip already than the plain R44T, not sure why they used the "XL" extra long tips unless they figured longer is better..LOL
R44TS plugs are as common as mud. The XL's are a full 3/4 reach according to AC's book. The extended tip on the TS plugs is supposedly to project the electrode into the cylinder a bit more and into the intake charge for longer plug life and cleaner emissions. Does it work?? No idea.
Use the R44TS plugs, they will work fine. It's what the factory installed in lots of cars.
UNLESS your motor has NEVER been re-built -
you will not be sure of clearances...
I would use the same as you took out.
Call me conservative, just me.

R44T will be fine- gap them at .035 The difference between the 2 (R44T and R44TS) is just the tip. With a stock point type ignition any bigger gap may cause a miss. Is the emissions label still readable? It'll have the plug gap printed on it..
The plugs you pulled out are used only on the '71 LS6 aluminum head 454 engine. Those plugs are very difficult to find. The 1970, '71 & '72 454 LS5's call for a tapered seat plug style. The '69 second design L88 and ZL-1 engines used a R43XL, while the '71 LS6 called for a R44XL.
If your car has the original equipment heads I would stick with the T plugs. I had the same question a while back and found some good info on the NCRS site. Here is the link to that thread.
