What can I use to clean up/shine up/preserve the various hoses in the engine compartment?

You can use wax and grease remover to intinially clean any crud or build up and then just use any cleaner you prefer. If you want a shine, just use something like a tire shine.

Use laquer thinner - wear gloves - it's what a lot of pros use. Home Depot, Lowes/etc stock it in paint section.
