Default Magnaflow vs Flowmaster

Thinking of getting new mufflers. Mine's a 78.
Not sure why i should pick Magnaflow vs Flowmaster.

I know that Magnaflows produce a deep rumble and Flowmasters produce a loud throaty noise.

Correct?
Is there anywhere I can hear how they sound?

yes there is a site where you can hear different mufflers, not sure if i would trust it altogether. there is also another supposed nice muffler called Borla that is supposed to sound good, look into them too. they were recommended to me but i'm happy with my setup.
i have been to the exhaust sound site but i forget where or who and i didn't bookmark it. the good people here will direct you if you can explain the sound you want in a text format...g'luck

I would consider Magnas to be throaty as well, and I would say that Flowmasters Drone and Resonate. I don't like the Flowmasters at all, and in fact they are what I started with and replaced them with Magnas.

search on this section for my user id and "autox:. you will find a video of my vette racing with 2.5" exhaust with x-pipe and magnaflows. I love the system....very nice roar when I get up on the gas but when cruising at any speed dead silent so I can talk with my girl (or hear her yell at me) while we have the top down and cruising at 60+mph

I too was in the same situation. I talked with others, and looked online. I have a '75 vert and wanted a little bit of a growl but didn't want it to drown out conversation or my "tunes". I decided to go with Walker DynoMax. While I have not installed them yet....maybe this weekend!! .....I can tell you something about pricing. In the corvette catalogs the best price I found, when I could find them, was $150 each! I found out I could order them through my local Advance Auto store for $98 each!!! They carry a wide varity of mufflers so check them first for whatever muffler you decide on.

Good luck!!

At WOT the Magnas are loud. My buddy in college once told me that he always knew when I left campus, because he could hear me open up, as I fled the scene.

I've had both and like Magnaflows better. You have it correct...the Flowmasters have a really loud and raspy tone, where the Magna's have a much deeper, mellower rumble. While at WOT either will break windows in the neighborhood you're passing through, I think the Flowmasters will do start doing so at a much lower rpm level.

They're each excellent quality products...it comes down to what sound you like better. I prefer the Magna's.

I have Flowmaster 50's and headers on mine and I love it. They're not too loud at all. I know the 40 series flowmasters are louder and they are the ones most people have.

I believe Corvette Central has the link in their exhaust section to hear how the magnaflows sound. But not sure how accurate it is. They sound louder then what has been described to me when I asked this question last month, though based on most opinions this is the set up I'm going with this spring.

My '71 has Flowmasters on it. The previous owner put them on but I have no idea which ones they are.

But let me tell you.....when I sit in there and fire it up...it sounds like I am sitting in a race car. The car is loud as hell and everyone in the 'hood knows it.

The thing I DON'T like about them is when you do throttle up, the sound thins way out and gets "raspy".

Go to my website and keep hitting the refresh button. You'll hear my new Magnaflows on my '70 350/350. I put them on last weekend, and like them a lot.

Headers, 2.5" dual, X-Pipe, Flowmaster 50's. Been quite happy with the setup for a few years now.

I've got Magnaflows on my '69. Had the stock mufflers before, and was very pleased with Magnaflows. I have not compared them to others though. Maybe someone could set up a "sound off", same engines, exhaust systems, but different mufflers. I enjoy mine with the tops off, rear window out, and nailing on the entrance ramp to the expressway!!

Then again, this is one of those things, kind of like "beauty in the eye of the beholder..."

I hope your happy with whatever you end up using.

What's the purpose of using X-Pipes?

It evens the pressure from side to side before it exits. You get a smoother exhaust note that way. It's more balanced.
