Default window regulator

Hi,
The left window in my 82 can be slid down by hand, then the motor will lift up normally. I figured the regulator gear was needing replacement. I took out the regulator assembly (with much cursing), and found the three bolts that hold the motor to the regulator were very loose, creating a lot of play between the gears. The gears both look good, I don't see any damaged teeth. This seems too easy to me, can I just tighten up the motor and reinstall the assembly or am I missing something?
Thanks,
Tom

Actually, your problem might not have anything to do with the regulator. If your gear teeth aren't broken, Your motor is sound, and you regulator is functioning correctly, then i would check the wiring to your motor as it goes through the door.

I had the same problem with mine. the window would go up just great, but absolutly nothing happened when i moved the switch to roll it down. Ended up the wire had broken apart inside the rubber boot in the door jamb.

Un plug the wires out of your motor and then pull both sets out through the opening behind the kick panel.

Hope this helps!

So what you are saying is its not a power issue. You are thinking you can push it down by hand because the motor was loose and didn't grab the teeth....right?

If thats the case you probably could tighten every thing up and reinstall. Check it...tighten everything up while its still out of the door attach it to the plug and use your switch to move the regular through its range of motion. See if something else is failing...ie the motor internal gears.

Hi,
I cleaned and lubricated the regulator assembly and reinstalled the motor. As jdp6000 suggested, I connected the regulator assembly to the door harness to test. The regulator ran in one direction, but not the other. I checked the window switch and had 12 volts for up and down direction. I then bench tested the regulator with a 12 volt transformer and again, the regulator moved one direction, but not the other. OK, the motor is bad, got new motor installed and still have only one direction of travel on the regulator!!!! I then removed the motor from the regulator and bench tested it, the motor has both directions of travel!!! What am I doing wrong?
Thank you,
Tom

do you have 12v all the way through the wiring harness? might have a broken wire as stated above.

I assume your power source on the bench was other then from the car through the switch? If its new it should have worked. could be switch. could be wiring.

Two things you can do. Use jumper wires from the plug that attachs to the motor. Use the two that give you movement and jump to the prongs on the motor for the motion that doesn't work. See if it works.

Other thing. Pull the panel off the other door. Open the port and use the working motors plug. See if that works.

last. Do you have the right regulator spring? Is it installed correctly? Should be installed in the full up position. As you power down it coils. It compensates for the weight of the window in the up motion. Regarless you should get up and down with the coil installed improperly or properly in your test. Unless you installed the spring real wrong or its to heavy (strong) and the motor is not strong enough could it. Does this make sense? Power down...spring coils tight....power up spring uncoils helping motor to push window up.

Motors seldomly go. 99% of no up is the spring breaking (usually find it at the bottom of the door) or getting weak. 99% of no down is the motor, wiring or switch.
