Just kidding about the title but its close...read on.... My 71 was running terrible a few months back and I was waiting to bring it to my mechanics shop. Last it ran the car was stumbling something severe bucking etc. Also noticed a bit of white smoke coming out so thought carb/ignition may have been messed up along with a potential head gasket.
Turned out that there was 3 gallons of water in my tank!!!! Carb had water in it too. I was surprised it ran like it did anyway. I am now waiting to get it back. Tank was dropped , fuel lines cleaned out , carb rebuilt ( needed it anyway) and a new fuel pump too.
Having a couple of other things taken care of too since spring is around the corner!!!
I dont even remember where I got gas last and even so it would be my word against theres from last year.
I used the car last year right thru November. I think it was just a real bad tank of gas. Maybe there was some condensation then the gas...who knows??? Just really sucks having this happen.
I read an interesting artical a couple of weeks ago from a local paper regarding gas containing ethanol and the effects of storing it over a couple of months like most of do when put our cars away over the winter. It doesn't paint a pretty picture. Not sure if this is the problem here but was it running like that when you put it away? Link to the artical http://www.projo.com/projocars/conte...6.22799b4.html
Thank you for that article. This could have been the culprit too then! Got the car back and it runs like a champ right now!!! After reading that article I will be buying fuel stabilizers going forward!!
Yup...Im recycling this again.....check this out. My car ran fine thru the fall and I ran two tanks of Sunoco Ultra and then filled it with Sunoco Ultra and added fuel stabilizers. I stored the car indoors with a cover on it back around November. Tried to fire her up a couple of weeks ago and I think there is water back in the tank. Im going to stop by after all this snow clears and spray some quick start in the carb. Anyone have any ideas???? Thanks!!! Only wish I could pour water in the tank let it sit and it changes to gas instaed!!!
I gues our cars should be treated like lawnmowers and chain saws. Run them until they run out of gas, then put them away.
My 73 has been sitting in the paint shop since August I wonder how much water is in the gas in that tank. I think it was about 3/4 full when I took it in.
