I would think a Walker stock replacement would be about as quiet as you can get with a stock system. The OEM cat and muff system sounds like a station wagon.
I still have my original system. I might put it back on some day but this time it would have a high flow cat where the stocker is.
What is the quietest type of muffler? I don't care about flow I want it as quiet as possible. I don't want to even know it is running.
I am with you on this one. I replaced my original exhaust with the true duals, and it is too loud. I am thinking of getting the original Walker type mufflers and installing them on mine. I wonder if they will just swap out with my current tailpipes of the true duals?
You want quiet... really quiet? If that's a main goal, and if you can live with sedate performance, you might consider an engine mod to drop your compression.
If you've ever marvelled as a barely audible '40s car whispered by at a car show... part of the reason is the incredibly low compression they ran.
I'd think the cheapest approach might be to double up your head gaskets. Pricier would be different pistons. Also, a milder cam. Just some ideas aside from the obvious muffler choice option.
As for mutliple mufflers... I can't imagine finding enough room forward of the rear leaf spring to add any.
I guess i should inform eveyone a little more about what I am doing.
What I have is a sb 388 with an F2 Procharger making 1000hp the headers point straight out the side with a 3.5" collector and exit right behind the front wheels. You can't get much more flow then that and sure it is needed when spinning at 7500rpm but not at 2000 when crusing so I am putting together an under car system to be as quiet as posible and cap off the other with an electric cut out that will open at a programed rpm. this will also give me more bp for low end torque. Then I will have the best of it all wisper quiet and head rattling loud.
A true x pipe before in front of the mufflers will really make even noisy mufflers quiet. Had a dually with new performance mufflers and they were way too loud. Put an x pipe in and you could barely here it run.

OK...it makes perfect sense now...you're making a SLEEPER !
