Default body sealing material

i cleaned out the area that contains the wiper arms including removing all parts and scraped some very brittle black material off and it looks like it is used to seal the cowl to the birdcage. i plan to paint and put a fresh coat of the sealer over the seems. what type of sealer do you use?

I think most of what I have used in the past was 3M. They have some that is in a caulk-type tube, and also some sold in strips (sort of like modeling clay). I have also seen a brush-on type. Any paint and body supply store should be able to hook you up.

I did mine last Saturday with 3M brushable seam sealer. Worked great. Painted over it and back like new! While your in there may as well suck all the leaves out from the inner fender.....

Anybody use that black roof sealer? Seems that it would be ideal. I have this same project oin my "while I'm there" list.

I just removed all that crap, filled any cracks/gaps/holes with fiberglass, sanded the entire area smooth. Might use some stuff to further smooth it all out before priming/painting.

I also bought a wiper cover to cover it all up with.

thanks for the great feedback - i'm going to try the 3M brushable sealer and get a vacuum down into the inner fenders. On the same off topic - is there a way to access the bottom of the inner fender to keep it cleaned or has anyone drilled a hole to keep sh&t out? it seems that water could collect there although i dont see any rust.
