Out of all the cars I've ever owned, I don't think I've ever had the door latching mech. fail. It appears the one on my '80 is. Alignment looks good while latched. I have new striker bolts. I thought it may be the new weather stripping but I'm wrong. The latching mech. won't catch on my finger most times. So my question is, what goes wrong with 'em and how do you fix 'em? Does a spring break or something, or do I need to buy a new latch? Are they shared with other GM or 'Vette specific? Thanx!
My passenger door would not "catch" ....I pulled the door panel and found out some doo-hickey needed grease up inside the mechanism. It's worked fine for over 15 years now.

Mine were frozen when i first got the car. What i did was remove them, let them soak in a gallon on metal cleaner, and then grease them up with white lithium grease. If that does not work, than something is probably broken inside.
