Default Tach question, 1981

Many thanks in advance!

My tach has just stopped responding. Does not do anything... just dead.
(What info do we need to know, like the distributer type, or the engine was rebuilt, etc.?)

So my question is: What is the first logical steps to troubleshooting this issue?

I have searched the forums... but would like a clean, plain and simple approach.

"So, your tach stopped working? OK.. the first thing(s) you need to check is..."

Is the tach wire plugged into the distributor?

Do you have any blown fuses under dash?

At the rear of the intake manifold there is a tach "filter". Silver capaciter looking thing with wires going to the distributer. You can unplug the wires from this and bypass it. See if that makes any difference. If not, probably the tach board mounted to the back of the tach itself.
All the vendors sell these. Installation is easy on 78-82s.
In the main gauge cluster you will see 3 pairs of screws at the top. Remove the 3 screws that hold just the clear lens and the 2 on the sides for the lens. Remove the lens. Remove the 6 allen screws holding the bezel(these are real, unlike the cosmetic ones elsewhere).
3 screws hold the tach face in place, remove them and carefully pull the tach out. Replace the board on the back making sure the insulaters are placed correctly.
