Anyone know the reason why a 1970 LS-5 vette engine is rated at 390HP and a 1970 LS-5 Chevelle engine is rated at 365HP? Are they the same engine specs except for maybe a lower rise intake for Corvettes.
My guess is they are the same and just wanted a lower HP rating for Chevelles due to corporate rules or Insurance premium issues. The question always comes up for me at Barrett-Jackson time. I have wondered about that but never looked at a Chiltons to investigate.
it's actually just Lower compression ratio, i believe. Motors we're basically the same otherwise. Can't have the chevelle with more ponies than the corvette.
Someone smarter than me will chime in if i'm wrong.

Reason is Corvettes cost more than CHEVELLE'S so it had look like you got more . Just like the 70 Corvette LT-1 rated 370 HP & the Camero Z-28 360HP. All are the exact same engine just GM sales hype with HP ratings.

First you're confusing two different years. The 1970 LS-5 Corvette is correct, in that it was rated at 390 hp. The 1970 LS-5 Chevelle was rated at 360 hp. The difference was that the Corvette used an open element 14in air cleaner housing, while the Chevelle used a closed single snorkel element housing. Second, the Corvette used the streamlined free'r flowing exhaust manifold design, while the Chevelle had the more restrictive log style design.
The 1971 LS-5 Corvette used the 365 hp.
