Guess I did a dumb thing... Last year I replaced the oil pump (MY77HV) and rear main seal while I had the 4-speed out of my 71 (BB) car. Problem is that I did not know about requirement to tack-weld the pickup tube. Now, 10 months later I'm hearing that I should pull the pan and pump to corect that oversight (its the original LS5 motor and I don't want to distroy the engine leaving it as is.) QUESTION IS: Do I have to pull the tranny first, or can I get the BB pan out with out pulling the tranny. I am lucky enough to have her on a 4-post lift (but that makes lifting the engine a little harder) Thanks for the help.
I don't know for sure with a big block engine, but you should have room to get it out by unbolting the idler arm from the frame and letting the suspension fall. In most cases this will give you enough room to get that pan out so you can take care of the oil pickup.
When you're in there, it's a good time to install the pan back in with a new Fel-Pro one piece rubber oil pan gasket.
That was a quick one. For anyone that was interested, the answer is NO, you don't have to pull the pan. I just finished replacing the pump with a MV77HV and ARP shaft that I had on hand (tacked the pickup in two places). Also installed one of the viton rear main seals and a one piece oil pan gaskets while I was in there. Topped it off with 10W-30 and a Mobil 1-111 filter and she purrs like a (small) tiger. Guess spring fever got the best of me! Anyhow- thats done!
