Default need help with my keys!!!

I have a '77 that doesn't require the key to start the car... which is not the best for security i am told. Could I buy a replacement key/lock set from Willcox or similar vendors and install that? If so, would that be a difficult install on the steering column? Or is my problem somewhere else entirely?

Any advice is greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

I bought my 77 lock assembly at Autozone it works great unless you are doing NCRS. As far as installation it was also easy do a search for Jim Shea'a corvette steering papers and he has very detailed drawings and excellant verbage to describe step by step replacement.

It's not a hard job. The only special tool you will need besides a steering wheel puller you will need what is called a locking plate removal tool to remove the locking plate clip. Both these tools are available for rent at autozone and easy to use. Just be careful how everything comes apart especially the horn parts. You will be fine if you use Jim's papers.

There is a tip at the end of one of my papers. It might be good to review it here. If all you are working on is the horn, telescope lock, or lock cylinder (minor stuff that just requires disassembly of a dozen or so parts) I have found this to be a big help.

Take a towel and roll it up. Stuff it between the windshield and the dash with the tail of the towel just hanging over the dash pad. Now as you remove the smaller parts from the steering column, place them in a row on the towel. When you are done, the parts are all there right in a row and in order.

The tail makes a good, no slip, surface for retaining the parts. The rolled up end prevents the small parts from slipping down into the defroster ducts and becoming a permanent part of your air distribution system.
