Default Coil Capacitor

The capacitor that sits beside and hooks up to the coil has broken free from the wire.

What is the purpose of this part? Do I need to replace it? The car seems to run fine as it is. Is it for the radio as a noise suppressant?

70 with a base 350 no air 4spd am/fm radio

Thanks

'70 is a mechanical tach. That little cap you're looking at is for radio noise. It's job is to keep the points from making noise that gets to the radio speakers. If you have no noise, toss it. Or keep it as it's an original part. You won't have any noise on the FM side usually, it'll be on the AM.

I though it might be for radio noise.

Usually don't use the radio anyway....sounds lousy compared to the sound of the engine!
