Don't know about other States, but in CT we only need to worry about emmissions & getting the car Legaly Registerd in the first place. (and sound ordanances)
My 82 was 24years old when I bought it. At the time to get registered it had to pass emmissions w/the Cat. & stock exhaust, but there was no "inspection". Then after the car turned 25 years old, here in CT, they are exempt from the emmissions thang. So No reason not to. . .
Lose the Air Pump, and get Headers Straight Pipes and Preformance Mufflers.
I'm not sure what would happen today if I had to go through a "Full" inspection. Just Happy I don't!
As far as the "Antique" thing goes, I don't see a down side. So if there are benefits, why not register it that way. I did.

Something else to consider with straight pipes is the loss of back pressure. It'll be obnoxiously loud, and your low-end performance will suffer greatly on a stock engine. Mufflers will tune your exhaust and provide the back pressure it needs at low-end speeds.
