I had a sagging door handle on the passenger side of my 77. I installed one of those little pieces of shim stock that Ecklers advertises as a door handle spring repair, but it still sags the same. I slipped it over the original spring, which appears to be broken, but it didn't fix the problem. I know I installed it correctly, according to their instructions, but it didn't help. Anyone have this happen?? Do I need to replace the entire door handle assembly to fix the problem, or am I missing something??? Thanks,
Kenny
The spring on the door latch mechanism down in the door, that the handle is linked to, might have a bad or broken spring. That might also cause the droop you're experiencing.
Since it is a high visibility item, I would replace it.
Some things are worth fixing, others just need to be replaced.
If yours is like mine was, the chrome is probably showing some pitting or slight wear at least, and a new handle would make it look that much better.
Just my opinion, but the sagging handle would drive me nuts.

How would you remove the old one. Would you just tap it out from inside the door?? Would you have to put any kind of sealant on a new one after the install, or just press it down in the door??
Thanks.
comes out from inside the door. when I purchased new ones for my 77 instruction didnt say anything about sealant but I used clear tub and tile caulk when I installed the new handles
There is a black (rubber?) gasket ring that installs under the chrome piece. I bought mine at Carlisle, but Eckler's (cat. #A5549) and others have them.

There are two nuts that are go onto the threaded studs which are part of the door handle. When you get the new handle, you will see what I mean. There is some linkage you need to disconnect and then you have to reconnect it to the new door handle. This is the tricky part, too much pressure on the trip lever and the door latch mechanism will not operate properly. Not enough pressure, and it won't trip the mechanism.
Best bet would be to get your hands on an Assemlby Instruction Manual or service manual specific for your corvette. I did this myself, lost some knuckle skin and practiced patience outloud...
Thanks for the help. Now I know what to look for when I get started. It's just one of those little cosmetic things that everytime you look at it, you say "I've got to fix that".

I know what you mean. Mine works fine and dosen't droop but the chrome is shot. I ordered a new one (not the china version) but they are on backorder until May 31 (Ecklers). They may have the china version but I've heard nothing but bad things about those and never considered one.
