What does everyone recommend for spark plug routing on a 74 with the stock exhause manifolds? Can the wires be brought over the top instead of from the bottom like the originals? Any recommendations on a good source of precut wires if you switch to coming from the top?
I would recommend routing the wires the same way they were originally installed. The back to cylinders on each side are straight forward. The front two on each side takes some time and patience (and a lot of hand cleaner)but it is not that bad of a job. I did the following for each wire, one at a time:
Removed spark plug boot from old wire.
Removed distributor boot from new wire and taped over the end.
Pulled the old wire through while following it with the new wire.
Once you are past the motor mount, you are virtually home free.
For wires, I used the GM replacement set (Goodwrench).
You don't say if you have a small block or big block in that 74,. My photos of a 74 350 show the wires are under, and pictures of early 70's 454's show wires on top of the valve covers. I suspect that if you ordered pre-cut wires from any production supplier like MSD, Accel or Taylor,, you would get wires similar to what the factory produced, including the length and recommmended installation. That said, MSD makes excellent wires that are custom fit, very low resistance-and pricey- but you dont replace them often. If you want to change the factory installation, to top or bottom, I suspect that you'll have to purchase wires that must be cut by you.
