The low fuel light in my 78SA wasn't working. I know there's only 2 gallons of gas in it and it should be on. Took the glove box out and reached over and took the module out. Looked it over, nothing burned or damaged on the printed circuit. Stuck it back in and it started to work again. Took it back out and bent the 3 contacts to make it a little tighter. Worked....but then it gradually faded and went out. If I reached behind and just touched the back with my fingers it went back on....then faded out again.
I know it works by resistance. Am I applying resistance when I touch it? Is there a specific component that is causing it to fade out?
Just like to have it working right.
Mine doesn't work either... have some pictures perhaps? Didn't even know it was behind the glove box.
It is not, the low fuel light is just a bulb socket with a small circuitry board on the back. It goes into the back of your center cluster with a bajonet type lock just like all the other bulbs. You can however easily reach it if you take out the glove box liner.
'78s have a low fuel light?? Well smack my @ss and call me Harry, I never knew that.
I would say that has me more intrigued than the fact that it is not working. Is there on on a 79 as well? I've never noticed one coming on. Did not even think there would be one on a car that old.
Mine never used to work at all, you could literally run the car out of gas and the light would not come on. All of a sudden one day, for no apparent reason it came on and has not gone out since, even with a full tank of gas.

It was introduced no later than 77 as part of the Convenience Group. Less than 9,000 77s were built without the CG, and it was finally made standard for 79.
I had just the opposite on my 79; the light wouldn't go out. Decided that the easiest solution (not the right one but the easiest) was just to remove the bulb.
No solution but my update. Swapped the light/module with the one in my white79, same thing. The module out of the 78SA works fine in the 79.
Something with the center gauge circuit board?
Not important enough to start tearing stuff apart right now.
Being that I like everything to work in my 80. and persistent to getting this fixed..could my intermittant problem with the gas warning light going on/off at times be the circuit board on the light? and do they make replacements?

I've owned my 1980 Vette since 83. I replaced that light/board every five years or so. They don't last very long. Too problematic for me. They aren't available new anymore. When they were...they went for $75 each. If you do a search on here you'll find guys that have built their own versions.
