Default NCRS Carburetor Question

A newbie question here...

I got my first Corvette a month and a half ago. It is a 1972 Coupe, 350/200 Automatic. An NCRS judge showed the car for a friend of his who had to make an out of town trip on the weekend I went to look at it. He obviously did not spend enough time to "judge" the car for me but he went over the major parts with me to make sure they were "correct". I wanted to double check some things and wondered about the carburetor. It has stamped on it the following:

7042202
G1DJ

Here is what it says on page 4 of the pocket sized "1968-1982 NCRS Corvette Spec Guide" for Rochester Carburetor markings:

"Quadrajet identification numbers are stamped into the vertical boss on the left-hand side, above the secondary throttle shaft. Also contained are the Julian calendar date and an assembly line broadcast code. Some Quadrajets were manufactured by Carter for Rochester and their castings are so identified."

Mine then does not have the Julian calendar style date on it but rather the two character, i.e., G1 as stated earlier for what I assume is July 1971? Is that right?

Can anyone tell me what the "DJ" part of "G1DJ" means?

I did find this link. Again it appears in the 2nd paragraph that the first 2 characters, e.g., G1 in G1DJ means July 1971. Can't find where it describes the last two characters. Maybe I missed it.

Thanks everyone in advance!!!

Roger

...DJ should be the broadcast code for the carb. Broadcast codes were used on carbs, starters, alternators, radiators, distributors, master cylinders, transmissions, etc., to more easily identify the part needed to be installed by the assembly line worker on any given Corvette with various options.

Paul:

Thanks. So then the broadcast code really has no relation as to whether or not the carburetor is correctly coded for my car, i.e, it is the G1 (July '71) that is important?

looking in my NCRS judging book I got when I done my 68, Your carb is correct. One thing I found out about this judging is that what is in the NCRS and other vette restoration books is dont believe all you read.
I had a untouched 68 small block 327 with 350 HP AC car. The books said that my fan shroud was wrong and NCRS took points from me, I found out 3 years latter that it was correct and they changed the books. I wont ever judge a car again, I restomod all of them.

NCRS is a welling meaning group of people...but...when their judging book says that the date code of an 1979 L-82 aluminum intake is not judged as "it is on the bottom of the intake, thus not requiring the person owning the vette to take the intake off" they are sadly mistaken...there is NO date code on that intake...I have personally seen 6 of those intakes...none of which have a date code on them...when we owned a 1978 pace car, I had an NCRS C3 judge who was at a local vette show tell me the car was perfect "except the wheels were incorrect as there should be TWO red stripes on the outer portion of the wheel outer rim"...he even wanted to continue the argument even after I showed him a picture of Pace Car #3 that I had taken at the Corvette Museum that had one stripe

Roger,

in 72 (not unlike other model years), Q-jets were furnished by both Carter and Rochester but used different date codes...which threw me at first. The 7042202 is a correct GM number for a 1972 350 200 hp with auto transmission as you've concluded. And the DJ is the correct broadcast code for your car. The date format is what threw me but than your carb is a Carter Q-Jet and therefore the date code follows the MY format or month/year. The G1 indicates a July 1971 date code (G=July). This should be consistent with the trim tag date code (driver's side windshield post).

If you go back to your NCRS guide (1970-72), read the section under the Carter Q-Jet. I'm referring to the tech guide and not the pocket guide.

hunt4cleanair is correct. I have a '72 BB Auto and the correct carb for the car is a 7042216 which I have. It is a Carter which was made for GM in '72 and the date code is D2 for April '72.
If you look at the base of the carb you should find the Carter embosssing.

Chris,

Ah, yes, the elusive #7042216 for 72 BB w AT. Coulda had one @ Carlisle 2 yrs. ago for $1,600 for my LS5 Cpe, but I didn't bite. I am sure that they are more $$ now.

Opted for Holley 650 instead, used for $125. Works for me, and runs great.

I paid $1095 for a fully restored 7042216 carb. Oh well I have it now. There have been a couple of 7042217's going on Flebay recently for 300 - 600 unrestored. If you are still looking will keep an eye out for you, let me know.
