I finally finished my rear speaker box with a storage comparment in it, and I wanted to share it with you guys. Somehow this is the result of a blown heater core....you know how it is when you start taking something apart to fix it and you just keep digging deeper, in both your wallet & car. So after pretty much a complete interior make over now, this is what I came up with as you will see detailed in the pictures below.
After stripping the interior I installed a full coverage layer of Dynamat Extreme and an Al Knock carpet set (with jute backing) over it. When I ordered the carpet set I also got an extra 1.5 yards of carpet, without backing, for the speaker box project so it would look seamless when fitted. After laying the carpet I fabricated a speaker enclosure that houses two 6.5" JBL speakers and has a hinged lid that has a carpeted storage area with a useable storage space that is 13.5"L x 6"W x 8"H in the center under the lid. The finishing detail is my former gas tank lid emblem that I repainted and affixed between the speakers for a factory looking finish (I hope anyway). Being a vert, I wanted to make sure it tucked nicely under the soft top when down, but would be proportionally correct if the top was up. I was also able to squeeze a set of 6.5" JBL's into the kick panels as well so that if I want to hear tunes over the top down wind noise and the big block, I can.
Hope you like it, and maybe inspires your own creativity.
I finished the interior today and got to fire up the new Kenwood hooked up to all 4 JBL's and it sounds great. Getting rid of the indash speakers and moving up to 6.5" in the kick panels and the rear box is night and day difference.
Ordered my new DeWitts radiator last night so I'm on the home the stretch for this year's projects. Unfortunately I ordered the wrong freaking Stewart high flow water pump thanks to weak info from Eckler's tech department...should have looked at the Stewart website before ordering I guess. Need to return it for a 5/8" shaft, we'll see how that goes in the morning.
That looks, and I bet sounds, awesome Ray. I have a '75 vert and would be very interested in the measurements you used for your box. I want to put in a sub but would like to still have room to get to the three storage compartments in back. Any chance you can list the dimensions?
That looks great How does it fit with the top down? Do you have any pics?
Thanks
Jim
Jim,
The last 2 photos are with the top down and the deck closed. You can just see a slight sag of the folded top in those photos. I think I can work this where it doesn't sag and expose itself in the center. For the most part the top rests right on top of the box.
Were you looking for a shot with the deck up and the top down? If so, I can shoot one later tonight and post it.
