It's not fun from what I have read. The heater core is removed from the inside if I recall correctly.

Has to come out from the inside...not much fun. Yank the big box off of the inside of the firewall, the heater core is in there.

Don't know the difference between your '79 and my '75, but I just changed mine. Drain the radiator to a level below the water pump, remove the lines where they attach to the core from under the car. Remove the r/h dash pad, front l and r console covers, center dash instrument bezel (a real pita), all of the ductwork on the center and r side. The core box is now ready to remove from inside. Two bolts or nuts inside the car and two on the engine side firewall. I may have missed a few steps, but you have the general idea. I found the hardest thing was getting started. I've had the interior of this car apart several times for various reasons; just wish I didn't have to do it again.
