One of the reasons for the 77 updated gauges/radio/console setup was for radio fitment so no an actual 77 GM radio should not fit earlier Corvettes.

In earlier model years the radio for a C3 was Corvette specific...it was a separate tuner section and amplifier section. The tuner is what you see attached to the center gauge section and the amplifier section is behind the dash attached to the bulkhead.

GM ultimately dictated that all radios throughout the GM line would be interchangeable (outside of trim badging) for cost cutting measures. After that, all C3's used the standard configuration GM radios, but they weren't interchangeable with previous radios C3's used. Essentially the same thing happened for heat and a/c controls...all GM cars used the same control unit.

With the advent at that time of factory stereos...with 8-track, cassette, CB receivers, etc., it was a sensible move.

Can't say for a fact the '77 radio won't fit the dash bezel, but you'll at least have to modify the wiring somewhat.

An aftermarket radio may be the way to go...better quality sound, etc.
