I stand corrected, but if it is a stock shifter, you should be able to disconnect the linkage arms from the tranmission and leave the shifter in place. From what I recall, the shifter bracket is bolted to the cross-member, not the transmission like a Hurst Shifter
Here is a shot of my original shifter before I switched to the Hurst unit.
One more tidbit. Not sure how you plan on disconnecting the back of the tranny from the driveshaft, but if you simply slide the yoke out, you'll have tranny fluid leak out. If you disconnect the yoke from the u-joint, you don't have to worry about it. I suggest draining the fluid then just simply sliding the yoke out when you pull the engine/tranny out.
