Hello All,
I installed a new battery and notice that my voltage Gauge is reading near the "Redline". At idle it reads around 14 and goes up to around 17 while cruising. This can't be good? Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Eric
Can I ohm that out somehow to check? Thanks for the reply.
With the engine running, use a digital multi meter, or DMM, and test the power at the BAT lug on the alternator, grounding to the case. If it's 15V or more, then you need to either rebuild your alternator or buy a new one.

Got it Db. Thanks for the help. I will check it out this evening. Looks like I didn't need the battery after all?
Eric
yes, it's the regulator, since it is internal, it is just as easy to replace the entire alternator unit.
Mine had the same problem, it outout 20 volts at 3000RPM, it put out plenty of amps, but when unregulated it was what they called ' a runaway condition' . I took it to Autozone and they put it on a machine and it immediately reported a bad regulator.
I checked the voltage at the alternator as Db said and got 14.8 thru rpm range. It was a constant 14.8. What now?
Eric
I had a bad alternator once that was fine until it hit 2000 RPMs. Once it got to spinning that fast the voltage would jump. Test it again, but this time revving the engine above idle, and see what happens.
