i just pick up a 427 casting #3963512 with date code of A189 which is January 18,1969. On the rear of the block, right next to the casting number 3963512, there is a "P". What does that letter "P" mean and was this block used in 1969 corvettes. Thanks for any advice.

Reason: misspelled word
Not sure about the "P"...but my understanding was this particular 427 casting was used on "Mid Production" 69 Corvettes. . Several other 427 castings were used. Production started in Aug 68 for the 69 model year, and went in to the 1970 calander year. Jan 69 may be a bit early for this casting, though it was used. Easiest way to tell is to locate the VIN on the pad to see if it is a Corvette VIN. I saw this casting on an M19 (August 19th) car.

P = Passenger car. '69 production ended in December 1969, before Christmas. 1970 production began about mid-January 1970. A January '69 block would be correct for a '69 produced in late 1/69 and possibly early to mid-2/69. January production ended with #14695. February production ended with #17571. VIN derivitive stamp on the block should fall within those two months, but stranger things have happened.
Engine assembly date could be any time after 1/18/69.

Frank,
Thanks for info.
So the "P" didn't mean that it was for a Passenger car? A block with that "P" could have been used in any of the cars that you mentioned.
thanks, jim
I have seen a 'P' or a 'T' or just blank under the 3963512 cast code.
Some have told me that the 'T' either means truck or Tonawanda.
I have seen all 3 in some blocks that were cast close in date. Nobody has ever given me a definite answer.
