You can only say 'Damn' if your tourning the Hoover Damn. Then you can ask all the Damn questions you want, take all the Damn pictures and buy a Damn soda while your walking around the Damn tour.
But seriously why didn't you ask before you purchased & installed them.
Its been written about a 100 times and no your not getting too old but old enough to not want to hear your mufflers and nothing else like your radio or passenger. Replace them w/either Magnaflow or Dynomax Super Turbos and sell the 40's to one of the kids on the forum. You can try the H or Y pipe it may bring down the dB's. Can't hurt & will sync the exhaust which is a good thing.
I have 40s on my 75 and they are not loud at all. I do have stock exhaust without the cat back to the flomasters. And I'm no youngster but I can hear my radio just fine even with the tops off. I can say that if I stand behind the car while it's running, it's louder than if I am sitting inside.

On both my Durango and one of my Vettes, I switched from Flowmasters...which the exhaust shops talked me into...to Magna Flows, because they sound so much deeper and richer.
I have the Flowmaster Super 40's and I don't feel thay are too loud a receive possitive compliments on them. Flowmaster has a couple of desins and the newer super 40's are quieter than the origional Flowmasters.
If I am reading Lon correctly he is referring to the raspy sound in addition to the volume. I had the same complaint on a truck I once had. No more flowmaster for me.
flowmasters sound like a pair of grapefruit cans with rattles in them. ther is no-way to save the sound except a new set. The Mustangs and Camaros fair no better. there all horrible...
From: 90% of all Fords are still on the road.....the other 10% actually made it home!

Well that's certainly a matter of opinion. I've owned 9 Camaro's, 4 Chevelles, and 2 Nova's, all from 66-73.....and every single one of them had 40 series Flowmasters. As far as I'm concerned there's nothing out there that even comes close to having a cleaner sound than a 2.5" or 3" dual Flowmaster exhaust system with an H-Pipe and 2 chambered 40's. IMO that's the true sound of MUSCLE!!!
Now if you want to have a quiet idle and a quiet cruise but a loud WOT, then go with the new Super 44 Series. (They outflow the 40's and the Super 40's) Trust me, I had to cut a brand new set off my car because they were too quiet. (I'm actually selling them with new hangers and chrome tips for $100)
I have to agree with the others about the "Too Loud - Too Old" thing,.. ...I'm running true duals with an H-Pipe and a set of the Flowmaster 1 Chamber Race mufflers on mine, and they're mounted before the rearend with only 5" of straight pipe behind them.
Is 41 old???

No, not too old....
You have Camaros, I have Camaros. Mine have Walker mufflers not flowmasters. Just a difference in taste. I prefer the horspower to speak for itself....
I had flowmasters 2 chamber 40s and they wern't loud at all on my 78.
I cut them off and gave them to my friend to put on his mustang. I just bought the super 44's and i 'm waiting to put on the vette. Hopefully their loud was 2 inch stock config with 2.5 middle section. Now switching to H config
I replaced an old set of mufflers last night with Magnaflows. They are certainly quieter than I had expected..... they have a deep tone when gassing it a bit... and I like that. Gearing down can bring them to life too.
So, I will give it a few months to see how I like them. (I noticed that the old pair I took off were Flowmasters.... I suspect they were old 40's or something similar)
My old mufflers were louder, but sorta sounded like a farting noise, not really raspy, but not solid.
Two things I noticed about the Magnaflows:
1. I get virtually no drone, especially at slow cruising speed. I can actually hear the radio clearly. The car now has a nice, quality sound... and it may have a slight increase in performance.
2. I was totally shocked at how well my cars runs now... it just purrs.
I am absolutely amazed at the smooth ride, idles like a million bucks... thick and chewy.
That alone was worth the swap. The fit was perfect, tucks up out of sight. Installed in less than an hour. I also think the new muffler hangers eliminated a vibration that I did not realize was there... making the ride feel smoother.
I did notice that when I pulled into the parking deck this morning the car had a fairly deep roar... not too quiet at all. I guess I just need some time to adjust.... but overall I think it was a worthwhile upgrade.

I made the change on the '72, which had Flowmaster 40's when I bought it and now has Magnaflows - much better tone and no resonance issues.
I think the Flowmasters sound like junk on the earlier cars with true dual exhausts and no cats, but sound better on the later cars with a more restrictive exhaust (such as cats, etc.).
In the end it is a matter of taste, and my taste didn't like the awful resonance and excess noise for no good reason.
