Default A Stupid Question

Whenever I read something about painting they always mention that one should buff the new paint to bring forth a shine. WAhat does one buff with? It appears my old tried and true buffer does not have enough revolutions to qualify as a ceiling fan in a pre World AWar II movie. AWhat do you all suggest? Also, is the clay bar worth having and would it work in this case?

Thanks

Mike

Usually a paint job has what is called 'orange peel' in the surface, meaning there are dimples that you can see when you look at the finish from an angle. If you want a Show Car finish you have to wet sand the finish to get rid of the orange peel. This leaves a dulled finished that has to be brought back to a shine. Wet sanding can involve 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500 and 2000 grit paper before the finish is ready for buffing. You need a random orbit buffer (I think) to avoid burning through the clear coat. You might want to find a book on detailing or painting to get all of the details. Clay bars are more useful for getting off junk that lands on your finished paint job.

If you aren't confident in your abilities you should find a good paint shop in your area to do the job for you. You can destroy a good paint job quickly if you don't know what you are doing.
