after re-installing my engine, the emergency brake light will not go off now. cables seem in adjustment. Pushing on the switch does not make it go out. Anyone got ideas???
That light is also for the brake failure. Check the wire at the proportioning valve under the master cylinder near the frame. Also check the brake fluid levels as one side may be empty and causing the brake warning light to come on.
Have you checked the wiring attached to the proportioning valve? It could have been disrupted during removal or installation of motor. On my 1977 this valve is located directly below the PB booster bolted on the frame rail.
I would unplug the wire at the emergency brake and check it. If it doesn't turn off, then unplug the proportioning valve and then check it. The brake light turns on from a ground, so some how that circuit is seeing ground.

Sounds like your valve is detecting an imbalance. Push down on the brake pedal very hard as if you are going to push it to the floor and hold it for a few seconds. This will recenter or balance the valve and the light should go out if everything else is ok.
I unplugged the wire to the proportioning valve and the brake light went out. Earlier this eveving I also re-bled the rear brakes and got some more air out. Ran out of light so I will do the fronts tomorrow after work. Best guess - air in the system, electrical problem or need a new valve?
As long as you have air in the system the valve could be sensing an imbalance. Get the air out first then try the recenter trick and hopefully that will do it. I have no idea how to test the valve. I got lucky and pressing the crap out of the brake pedal fixed mine.
Bleed the brakes completely. Then apply a firm brake application to re-centre the combination/proportioning valve. If several attempts does not extinguish the dash warning light you may have to replace the valve, as they sometimes stick in the failed position. Use a hard or firm brake application to re-centre.
Wow- I saw this post and got excited because I had been pulling my hair out over this issue since Oct. It took 3 tries until I felt the brake pedal sink about a 1/4 inch further and .....the light turned off! Brakes grip a little better and stop strait with no pull as well. Great Tip - Thank you!
