Out cruising today someone told me my brakes lights were out. I cleaned the switch and that solved the problem. But someone has wired a large capacitor across the leads to the switch. What would be the purpose for this?
My 68 has one also and I have had the car since 1972 .
Bought it from original owner and it was there when I bought it.
I have seen these switches for sale on Ebay as originals and they also had this capacitor but I don't know why it is needed.
I am guessing it came that way from the factory

I was an apprentice at a Chevy dealer in 69. We used to install capacitors on the stop light switches and turn signal flashers to stop the popping in the radio on AM. Chevy had an unwritten campaign to install them for owners that complained.
