I have a 1977 L-82 4-speed. The Vin has an 'X' in it to verify . my question is, what numbers do i check to make sure that it is the original engine and trans? And, where do i find those numbers? I know nothing about cars so details will surely help. Thanks guys, gary
The engine number is stamped on the block just ahead of the right cylinder head. The last 5 digits on the block should match the last five of your VIN number if it is the original engine.
I can not find the area where everyone is saying that the last 5 of the VIN # is stamped on the block. I do see a flat part of the blosk just ahead of the right valve cover.
This is, I believe, the casting number off of my engine. The only thing I can guess is that my engine is not original since I can find no numbers stamped into the block on the front.
I must be BLIND! I still can't find it. What other tips can you give me? Where is the cylinder head? I know it's in front of that according to a previous post. Thanks for the help and Patience.

Ah, oh, dude.
Its possible that it doesn't have the original engine or someone has done some engine work on this one and removed the numbers. The cylinder heads are on each side of the engine and are easily id'ed by the valve covers. In front of the passenger side head look for a small flat rectangular area. That is the pad where your numbers should be stamped. Its not very big, maybe 1 x 2 inches, and it's very possible for this area to be covered in grime and you may have to clean it off to see your numbers. May even need a wire brush. If you see the pad, but no numbers, it could be that the engine was worked on previously and the block had to be "decked" to ensure it was flat and mated with the cylinder head properly. Sometimes, in this process, the numbers are accidently removed.
The air cond. components are blocking my view. There is a bracket that shields the front of the head. Am I getting close? I know, I know. I will go play in traffic once I finally locate this @#$% thing. I hope my car never breaks or I'm in serious trouble!!!
