i have not done it myself, but i have seen it done with the 1200* paint and it had spots that were comming off. i have no idea if they prepped the pipes or how they were prepped. i had mine thermal coated locally and the results were very good. they can coat in multiple colors now. it is a little expensive but worth it.

Local place here was going to sandblast off crap chrome and coat both sidepipes to match headers for $150. Not too bad but never did spring for the sidepipes. Just have 1 black sidepipe to go with the black headers. Reminds me to look for another single sidepipe.....
When I had my 70 I painted the hooker sidepipes black then I painted them again, and again, and again, finally took them off and got ceramic coating done. You might want to try that.
It's all about the prep. The high temp paint will stick well. I suggest a light sandblast. You don't have to remove the chrome, just rough it up a little to get a matte look.
