I run 3.70's in my 80, and have had no problem with breakage. I do drive "easy" most of the time, but did manage to pop a 7004r rated at 600 horse with a single 2/3 shift at 6500 rpms.
I drive 43 miles one way to work, mostly back roads. The 3.70's work well for that, but extended highway does get old. If I were to do it over, I may consider 3.23- 3.42 for an overall street performance gear without running an overdrive.
If you already have the [non-overdrive] automatic, you will probably regret going to a 4.11...the 3.73 is a big jump from 2.73. If you had a 4-speed, the 3.73 would be great; with an auto tranny, 3.55 will do you well and still allow decent mileage on the highway.
Nothing wrong with a 4.11 and a automatic. In fact the automatic would be quicker with the right setup. Automatics have been a couple of 10`s quicker since NHRA realized years ago 4 speeds were not the hot ticket any more as when they first came out. .
I know miy auromatics are quicker than gear jammers.
