Nobody is saying they're not a good thing. The point is that it should be your choice whether or not you wear it.

In Pennsylvania, at the same time they made seat belts mandatory, they also made motorcycle helmets non-mandatory. Explain that logic to me!

I truly don't understand why we are even having this thread. Seatbelts are manditory in Ontario if they were in the car on day of manufacture. Yes, you can do what every you want however you suffer all the consequences. However I don't want to pay more taxes for health care in Ontario just to pay for your stupid mistake when you flew through your windshield or ended up being ejected from your car hurting yourself. Seat belts save lives and reduce injury and I for one have gone to enough funerals in my early teens for my friends that were killed because they weren't wearing seatbelts or helmets for that matter. Give it up guys on this bull around it is my life, its not, you have friends, family etc that are left with the sorry after your gone and for what because you were to pig headed and you had a attitude. What a pile of you know what.

You are right about seat belts, etc ............ federal mandates and for the years the shoulder strap was option .... if the vehicle came out with it from the manufacturers, you are obilgated to wear it and wear it they way it was designed to be used.

I personally think the safety system is uncomfortable, but after 33 years in law enforcement ........ seat belts do safe lives ...... not in every occasion will it happen ........... some people say "if I had been wearing it, I would have gotten hurt" ...... nobody can say either way, unless you are silly enough to be a test dummy.

Stay Safe & Enjoy

Default Cheating Death...or serious injury....

I am not usually one to stand up on a soap box and preech (except to my kids, of course). But I was a Paramedic for 23 yrs. and have seen many, many car accidents. Yep, I have seen some wrecks where we're driving up on the scene stating to one another in the rig..."He's dead." And the guy's over talking to a cop or something with a small cut on his arm or something.
In contrast, a few hrs. later you get on the scene of a possible "Property damage accident." only to find a driver of a car that was rear ended at a slow rate of speed, Guppy breathing with a head injury from the dash or windshield, only to die shortly after, or (IMO) wind up in a Nursing Home forever with a brain injury. A nice plant for the relatives to come and visit once ina while.
If that sounds harsh, it's meant to. Why in the name of all that care about you; would you want to gamble with the odds? Your call, I guess. Good luck with that

Yes, they were an option. But you can retro-fit.

For some reason lost in the mists of time those seats are not 1974 and the frames lack shoulder belt pass-throughs. I will be completing that shoulder belt retro-fit soon with new and correct seatback frames.

I think it should be up to the individual if he/she wants to wear a seat belt/helmet. They are adults after all. It's as simple as this- get in an accident wearing a seatbelt/helmet, insurance pays your medical bills. Get in an accident w/o a seatbelt/helmet, pay the bill yourself-if you're lucky enough to still be alive! End of insurance hikes because of people who don't care about their safety. End of police harassing people and writing tickets for something so stupid!!! Oh wait, what am I saying...."The man" needs some kind of lame excuse for screwing us out of our hard earned money! ! !

Wear the seatbelt. Last thing anyone wants is someones mangled body flying in, inconveniencing passers-by, just because they werent wearing a seatbelt when they got hit by somebody else.

OMFG, that comment is almost as ridiculous as the truck driver that once told me he didn't need to wear his seatbelt because he had a strong upper body and could just hold onto his steering wheel if he got into an accident......................

Seat belts and good tires, never drive without them.

i dont think we should be ticketed for it.. it should be a choice.
that being said, i feel ridiculous if im not wearing mine.. especially during moments when the car "accidentally" goes faster than it should. huggin corners and huggin the seat. im glad i have mine

One reason they CAN make you wear the seatbelt is that driving is a priviledge and not a right. The reason they do make you is that it is a proven fact that the odds of surviving a crash are increased by wearing a seatbelt. If you are injured, they are required to provide you with the medical treatment whether you have insurance or can afford the hospital bill. Since tax payers will foot the bill for alot of the injuries caused by accidents, it makes since to make you wear one just like it makes since to regulate your speed.

Also, if you aren't wearing a seatbelt the likelyhood of you losing control of your vehicle during an accident while you are bouncing around the inside of a car and injuring others is increased. So the safety of others is also weighed in on making you wear the seatbelt.

Basically thats all it boils down to.

And to put things into perspective, the impact of a 25mph crash is about the same as falling from 21 feet, just over 2 stories, on to the ground.

To those that say, "Hey, its my life, my choice", that's just selfish. Your family and friends get to cope with you being severely injured, or don't their feelings matter?

You are right it depends on the year. 1966 and newer cars were required to have seat belts and law enforcement officers know that. They deal with it everyday. Try telling an officer your 1975 car didn't come with seat belts and he's going to smile while writing you a ticket.
