I was looking over the engine compartment on my 82 vette and noticed another fan mounted to the radiator, is this an electric fan and when should it be running. I had just come in from a highway run and this fan was not running. Any info. Thanks
82s (and I think 81s) have a supplemental electric fan. Not sure of the exact temp it kicks in at, but my guess would be it would be more likely to kick in sitting in stop and go traffic then when out on the hwy.
Thats the Aux Fan. It is controlled by a thermo switch on the passenger head. It is set to 238* way to hot IMHO, but the General didn't ask me. The fan also is rather anemic. If it functions and you have no overheating issues leave it. If your having problems you need to get all that sorted out. Go thru the system by the numbers: Radiator seals, air dam, rad cap, fan clutch etc...
If your concidering mods, a full electric setup is the ticket.
well, to see if the fan works, look on the passenger head under the exhaist manifold. you will find a 2 wire plug, Unplug it and stick a jumper across the 2 contacts and the fan will come on, the key needs to be on but the engine does not need to be running.
I think the setpoint is way to high, if you could get a switch that came on at say 220 it would be better.
have the same setup on my 79 L82, but i converted the temp. control to this jegs unit, works much better now. and the key switch only supplies power to the
relay, instead of the fan motor itself, like chev. had it. mounted relay ontop of ac evap. box and supplied fan power from + on starter. mounted temp sensor in thermo. stat housing.
temp is steady at 195 to 200
