Default Engine Rebuild Question

My 72 SB has a matching #'s engine, so I am considering having it rebuilt for reliability. Any ballpark estimates as to what it should cost? Also, does anybody know any shops in the Westchester, NY/Fairfield County, CT area that could handle it? Not looking for the NCRS rebuild, just somebody that does quality work. Thanks!

Having the block dipped, fluxed, bored, cleaned, new freeze plugs, new cam bearings...will usually cost between $500 and $600 depending on the shop.

Be aware that with the bored cylinders you'll need over sized pistons, and you'll want a new crank if yours can't be turned.

as durango stated, basic labor would be $500-750. but, you would probably want new cam, bored cylinders, pistons, crank turned, balanced, bearings, carb rebuilt, new water pump, etc. closer to $2000-2500. also, labor to pull and reinstall the engine. could be $300 to 500 for this. and while you're at it, clutch, trans-what the hell do a frame off!

Do not deck the block unless the rebuilder assures you he/she will not remove the pad stamps in the process.

Maybe the question should be what I need to do with the car. The car runs fairly well, but I question the reliability since I had a fuel delivery problem some months ago. I also find the car to bog off the line. Any suggestions short of a complete tear down? Not looking to break the bank here.

Sounds to me like you need to have the carb tuned, and the engine timed.

If it's not blowing a lot of smoke out the exhaust or knocking, I wouldn't worry about rebuilding it right now. If it were me, I would pull the carb and distributor and send them to Lars. He does amazing work.

Have you done a compression/leakdown test?
Maybe a full rebuild is not necessary.

Take your car to Chuck at Corvettes of Westchester. He's the best around here(Westchester). His user ID on CF is Chuck COW. PM him or call him at 914-332-0049. He did my engine and it's been great. He's very reasonable and will have your vette running great. He's also a supporting tuner of CF.
