Default Oil pressure

I have a 78, engine is cold, not running. Oil pressure is reading 40. When at idle (at stop light, etc) it reads higher. When cursing, it will read at close to 80. It was doing this before I changed the oil. I changed the oil on 6/20/08.

Should the gauge show any pressure when not running?
If the answer is no, can the gauge be calibrated, if how?

Thanks in advance
Bill

The gauge is electric, so any reading you get when the car is off is irrelevant.

The readings aren't bad either, 40+ at idle and close to 80 when cruising seems a lot like the pressures of most everyone's Vettes, including mine.

When the ignition is off, the gauges can be ignored, they don't mean anything. I don't know why they rest where they do.

Your readings seem healthy to me.
