Default 427/435

Hi all,

I'm finally getting close to tearing down my '69, and starting on my rebuild, and was looking for some help on the powerplant. The car has a 454 in it from a '73 I believe, and I really would like to build a correct 427/435 tri-power for the car. I'm not sure if there is anywhere I can go to purchase a complete correct engine or not, so I'm assuming I'm going to have to source out all the right parts to build it. Can anyone help with correct codes etc, I would need, to find the parts to build an engine for a car born in October of '68? Thanks.

Your best bet is to buy a 68-69 NCRS Technical Informational Manual and Judging Guide. It will answer all your questions.

So if you are looking for correct date codes, does that mean it will be restamped?

I'm in a similar point in my project:

Definitely not...I actually should have mentioned something in my post. I'd like to build a correct looking 427/435 car...it will never be perfect, as my car is far from being an original BB car. I don't think a 'clone' would even be the best way to describe the way I envision building my car. My goal is to have it appear as original looking as possible, incorporating some mild custom design features. I have absolutely no intentions of building a car, and then trying to sell it as something it's not....mine's going to be a keeper. I'll have to track down the literature you've recommended, thanks for the reply!

P.S. Wish I had the space you do!

Externally there's no diff in a 454/427, why not just use what you got?? & put on apropiate valve covers, intake, exhaust etc even 3x2 set-up if you can afford one!!
That's pretty much what I did, I even used period correct 10.5/1 comp heads, I did have to change my console ID to the 390hp because I had no intention of spend the $$$ for a proper 3x2 set-up.

The 454 is going into the '79.

Here's what you're after. '69 shown, but all the 435hp cars will look essentially the same. Engine date codes would be approximately two weeks prior to the assembly date of your car, possibly longer. Big blocks were assembled at the Tonawanda Engine Facility and shipped to St. Louis prior to the assembly of the car.

Also, the 437/435 HP engines had a rectangular port intake manifold for the 3X2's. Another hard to find item, but they are out there. The 400 HP 3X2 engines had oval port manifolds. (Pretty sure I'm right about the intake manifold ports, but not 100% sure.)

Wish I had the space too, it's my buddy's shop!

I didn't mean to insinuate that you were doing something wrong if you planned to restamp, I think as long as the cars come with full disclosure I don't have a problem with it. The reason I ask was that your OP asked for info on correct codes relative to a 10-68 build date. I think (as suggested above) that if you don't intend to restamp and if you are building essentially a cosmetically correct engine compartment, you dont really need to be too hung up on date codes, just correct looking parts. (Naturally, correct codes are even better).

Have fun with the project.

No worries! I didn't take it the wrong way, but I wanted to be absolutely clear on my intentions also.

If anyone can help with additional info, or help source out some parts, I would be most grateful! Basically starting from scratch, so a block would be at the top of my list. I guess I should post a link on the parts forum also.
