Default temp gauge

temp gauge on my 79 L82 looks like a metronome. fluctuates rapidly up and down 10 to 20 degrees every couple seconds. is this most likely a sending unit problem, gauge or some other problem. what's the best way to troubleshoot it. thanks for any info.

Check coolant level. Replace sending unit. About 20 bucks.Low coolant and a thermostat opening and closing or sending unit would be my guess???

You can unplug the green wire at the sender and substitute a test light in place of the sender. This should put the temp needle at a fixed position.Drive the car and see if the needle still fluctuates. If you have or want to go to Radio Shack and buy a 68ohm resistor you can substitute the resistor which will put the temp needle around 215-220.If after the substitution the needle stops fluctuating then the sender is probably bad.(You can try removing the sender and cleaning the threads to improve the ground.)
