No you have not stepped in the C5 or C6 section. I had heard of using a clay bar before, but I thought it was one of those marketing ploys to get in your wallet. I just got done claying my Corvette and WOW what a difference. I haven’t seen any threads on here since I joined talking about it so thought I would start one for the guys like me who were non-believers. This stuff really works, if you haven’t tried it before it’s worth the 15 bucks to get a kit and give it a go.
I did the clay bar to my '75 about 5 years ago - lots of work, then used polish, then wax and it is still beautiful. And the nice thing when it's dirty just use a wet terry towel and dry - still beautiful. You know you've done a good job when the dry towels fall off the car.
I don’t think it would remove hazing or scratches, but it does remove over spray and other contaminants that dull the finish. I guess to answer your question buffing does go at you paint more aggressively. When you are buffing you are removing MUCH more than with the clay.

Go to the bottom of this page and do a forum jump to "car care discussion". Do a search on clay bar and you will learn everything you need to.
Be careful because there are different colored clays to use. The safest for me is Clay Magic (blue bar) that can be bought at AZ or other auto stores. IF you drop it on the ground it must be thrown away.

I used Meguiars kit from a local auto parts store

Depending on the condition of the paint and your eyes , you could simply wax after clay, or buffing with various grades of polish and wax would follow the clay bar if there are a lot of scratches in the finish. The clay removes contaminates roughly to what a fine or medium grit polish would remove, but without removing paint.
I used Meguiars kit on my '75. With the bar you are taking seen and unseen contaminants off the paint job. Then use polish - which means you are "lightly scratching the paint, then wax or other type of sealer to finish it off. If you use a buffer - if the car is not super clean - you will buff dirt into the paint. In essence the clay bar process makes your paint super clean.
Ditto on the Mothers kit. I've had to re-appy due to car sitting out under trees from time to time. Noticably smoother to the touch. Appy wax after clay bar.
It doesn't it just removes imbedded particals and alot of them. if you use clay and then buff, That makes for the best paint you can get out of the paint

another vote for Meguiars kit
did mine 2 years ago photo here http://hometown.aol.com/coronet69/page14.html
and it still shines like this today, all i have done since is
wash it and quick detail wax it, twice last year and once so far
this year
I read this post earlier in the day and I remembered that I had the
Mothers clay bar in my garage so out I went to clay bar the 71.
Cleaned it first than clay bared the car and WOW what a difference.
I bought the car about 2 months ago and I've used 3M cleaner different
waxes and the car still felt gritty to the touch, but now SMOOTH and no
haze used the cleaner than Mothers pure carnuba wax this car shines.
